As for askings: I was pretty sure negotiating wouldn't work because
a) I really wanted it, and the salesman could see that.
b) It's the newest model, on the shelves for a few days.
c) I didn't expect it to work.
d) I really wanted it. Enough to type it twice.
Here was my feeble attempt:
"Do you have any kind of specials right now, an iTunes gift card, anything?"
"Not right now, sorry."
"I'll take it."
Gained: Nothing.
Lost: Any distinction between myself and the ipodinous masses.
Sometimes it's fun to make a salesman sell you something you want already... ask him/her "Have you tried it? What do you like best?" It's not a free nano, but real human interactions count for something too. ;-)
